Pondering, Defining, & Unpacking Leadership – Part 2

Last week I attempted to set a common foundation by starting with things off with things we could agree on.

  • Leadership development is a critical
  • Leadership development is challenging
  • Leadership development will differ per individual
  • Leadership development requires TIME

It still remains true that, most leadership development sources and professional coaches focus on “rounding out the sharp edges,” by helping individuals identify their “strengths”,while, identifying our shortcomings, derailers, blind spots… aka: weakness.

This has made me ask several questions:

First, “Who do we follow?” (click here to read last weeks post)

This weeks question builds off our previous question.  “Why do we follow those particular individuals?”

  • People often follow individuals who help us grow. Genuine leaders help bring out our buried potential.  They respect us, see our shortcomings, and still mind out the best in each of us. These individuals have a ability to make us feel good about ourselves; while, helping us find ways to improve in our own strengths. And yes, they openly talk about their weakness and admitted their failures.  It’s from that place they genuinely help us understand how to best handle our own weaknesses.

Action step: Take a moment to leave a comment or your thoughts about, “Why do you follow particular individuals?”  I’d be honored to hear and have you share thoughts.  How? Simply leave or submit a comment below and personally commit take one step forward from where you are at today.
