For countless days, month, and years, I’ve oozed with envy, watching bloggers succeed while I wallowed in blogging mud.
Jealousy turned bitter!
Bitterness twisted to resentment, and I began to see the world through jaded glasses that distorted the truth.
These feelings tightened their grab around my mind much like a python strangling it’s prey.
I like to say I had a divine revelation that pointed me to the light and I responded. That however would be far from the truth! Once again learning from my age old adversary of pain – who seems to enjoy beating me to the ground, leaving me almost lifeless…. then at a breaking point I decided to TAP OUT and say…. okay…. I’m ready to listen now!
Truth is, I’m not a world famous blogger, writer, or rock star. Yes, a side of me seeks fame on a mentally twisted level, while the other side builds this blog, writes, and desires to do whatever I can to encourage, equip, and help others. My jaded rock star glasses have done me absolutely no good, as I can’t carry a note nor have I been invited to be on any late night show!
• I haven’t become famous.
• I haven’t had a book published.
After years of feeling this way, I decided to make a change starting with the one thing I could change – me.
How, did I start making the change within?
A) Taking long walks and discovering my deepest values.
B) Asking for help.
C) Making room for others to help and not micromanaging.
D) Writing for an audience of one (like having a one-on-one conversation).
As I started to change my behavior, a message that I feel passionate about began to emerge! If you feel that something within would benefit others or you have an idea worth spreading — the way you get others to care about it, is to first care about them! Don’t you dare just come out and share it expecting them to be excited about it.
Respect people’s time
Value where they are, and through conversation inspire them taking the opportunity to communicate your message and ideas.
Reality check!
How many random strangers have you given 100% of your attention to?
Get it?
To break it down further, here’s what I would suggest you do to obtain consistent online audience growth:
- Genuinely Care – Engage with others right where they are.
- Spend some time getting to know them and interact about what they are interested in.
- Become a Master in the Art of Listening.
- Listen to what they are already talking about. Gather information, resources, and as my grandfather would say, “go to school.”
- Interact – Reach out to Others in Their Community.
- Leave comments and subscribe to a few blogs. Read a book or two by industry leaders or listen to a podcast while exercising or driving.
Bottom line: DO LIFE ALONGSIDE OTHERS LIKE YOU because you TRULY CARE!
This has transformed my mindset & blogging!
Where am I today?
Talking story, sharing insight, working a 9-to-5, and striving to do my best work with gratitude and generosity.
Why? Because the point is not paying our dues or delaying gratification until payday. This is the best it gets.
The daily grind is truly an overlooked reward.
Are you saying, the work I do is cherished? It’s a REWARD!?!
Yes!
A masterpiece is created through the process! It’s seen before the paint brush touches the canvas and revealed through the process of doing the work.
Now, wouldn’t it be frustrating if I left you lingering there?
I won’t do that…. (*The little brother or antagonist side of me desires to leave you hanging wanting more..:-)
If you’re ready to take the next step, here’s what I suggest:
1. Change your mind. Make a decision to believe in your potential and to reject negative and envious thoughts.
2. Commit to a schedule. Start with thirty days, just one month, and set aside at least 15-20 minutes per day to work on your craft: writing, design, exercising, whatever. Share your work with a select few, but stay diligent to the discipline that comes from of a place of passion and desire.
3. Create something people disagree with. Live with conviction! This will help you stop the chasing others’ approval. Stand your ground. Pick a fight! Even if it’s with yourself! It doesn’t matter if you win or lose! If people disagree or agree, just take note of the thrill you feel when you completely let your guard down and write with passion.
After you’ve done those three things, take a breath and thank God for the opportunity to do something you love. And tomorrow, get up and do it all over again.
