Transform a worn dresser or tabletop using an acrylic painting technique that mimics the look of marble.

Sand the Dresser

Using various paints and tape widths, it’s possible to create an endless array of details on furniture and accessories. Here’s an inexpensive way to update bland, outdated dressers and nightstands.

Sand the dresser to rough up the surface, which will help to make the paint adhere. Thoroughly brush off the dust, then go over the dresser with a tack cloth to pick up any of the finer particles left behind.

Apply the Faux Surface

Squirt a blob of each shade of green paint on a plastic plate. Dip the sea sponge into all three colors at once and dab the sponge lightly on the tabletop.

Dab and smear the paint to create the look of marble. For a lighter look, sponge off excess paint onto a paper towel as you work.

Add Marble Veining

When the paint is dry, add marble veining. Dip a detail brush in diluted white (or very light green) paint and add fine lines to simulate veins. Remember to paint the veins over the edge of the tabletop as well.

If desired, sponge on lighter shades of green to soften the tabletop and add more depth to the surface.

Shine the Surface

When the tabletop is dry, apply a coat of high-gloss polyurethane to protect the surface and give it the shine of marble.
